Anatomy Of A Knife

Every surface, both inside and out, on each William Henry knife has been completely finished by master craftspeople in their studio. This finish work allows them to create different textures and finishes with seamless fit between the various components. Their mechanisms are measured accurate to 0.001" or about 1/6 the width of a human hair. To make a precision folding knife which has a mechanism that is both smooth and strong requires these tolerances. Every knife, when finished, is a custom piece. Each part has been fit and polished to that specific knife. No parts are interchangeable; no parts simply bolt on from a standard bin.

  • Blade: This is the part of the knife that does the cutting
  • Bolster: The front part of the handle - William Henry designs feature metal bolsters that are integral with the frame for ultimate strength around the pivot and lock.
  • Scale: The rear section of the handle - usually crafted from contrasting materials.
  • Button Lock: Secure and safe lock that can be easily operated with one hand.
  • Pivot: The blade rotates on the pivot
  • Thumb Stud: A mechanical feature that allows easy one handed operation. Press your thumbpad against the top of the peg and push forward.
  • Lanyard & Bale: Provides an easy way to remove the knife from its ClipCase.

Blades

 Blades

  • ZDP-189, black ZDP-189 with a tungsten DLC coating, ZDP Wave damascus
    • These blade steels have the best edge retention of any steel available - created from laminations of multiple alloys around a very durable core which creates the cutting edge.
  • Copper Wave damascus is just like ZDP Wave damascus, but with a core of VG5 instead of ZDP-189, and with layers of copper for beauty and flexibility.
  • Mike Norris and Devin Thomas hand forged stainless damascus.
    • Beautiful and functional, no two blades are ever alike

Frames/Bolsters

  • Damascus & heat blued damascus: Tapestries forged from steel alloys
  • Mokume Gane by Mike Sakmar: 89 layers of brass, copper and nickel silver
  • Titanium: Aerospace grade, light and strong, corrosion proof.
  • Wave Mokume: A patent-pending material invented by William Henry, made from Iron, Copper and Nickel Silver. This beautiful material can be heat colored to bring out blue or brown tones that perfectly compliment the handle material.
  • Koftgari: Koftgari is created with 24K gold and sterling silver inlaid and burnished against a heat-blued steel frame. Done entirely by hand.
  • Sterling Adornments: We use sterling silver in both hand-carving and traditional granulation. Often interlaced with 18K gold accents or inlaid gemstones.
  • Ironwood, Cocobolo, Snakewood

Thumbstuds and Lock Buttons: Mother of Pearl, Opal, Diamond, Blue and White Topaz, Sapphire, Ruby, Citrine, Spessartite, Smoky Quartz, Spinelle (all gem cut stones set in 18K white gold)

Accessories: ClipCase comes with virtually every knife (except those with integrated pocket clip), allowing for safe carry and easy access to the knife at the top of user’s pocket. All knives come with a wood presentation box.

Quality control - every knife made is individually inspected and must meet their rigorous standards or it does not leave the studio. 20% of all completed knives are rejected by our QC department and sent back for rework.
