Omar Vizquel SF Giants Photograph

Caracas, Venezuela native Omar Enrique González Vizquel has played for the Giants, Indians and Mariners in a brilliant Major League career. Vizquel is considered one of baseball's best defensive shortstops, having won nine consecutive Gold Gloves (1993-2001) and two more in 2005 and 2006.Playing for the Giants in 2006, Vizquel led all Major League shortstops with a .993 fielding percentage (four errors in 599 total chances) and is now second only to Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith for career Gold Glove honors (Smith boasts 13). Ozzie is just one of seven players, and first shortstop, to win multiple Gold Gloves in both leagues. His .984 career fielding percentage is the best in Major League history among shortstops who have played at least 1,000 games at the position. Other records/honors for Omar include: tied the American League record for most consecutive games without an error (95 between 9/26/99 - 7/21/01); 3-time All-Star (1998-99, 2002); became 230th major league player to reach 2,000 career hits on April 22, 2004; and named Venezuelan World Baseball Classic captain in 2006.
