The release of each of these movies was an event. People planned around it for months.- tickets were bought well in advance, parties were thrown and the truly hardcore donned costumes. If you fall into the latter category, you already own the extended version of each movie so unless you're thinking about purchasing this as a gift for someone I suggest you go back to slaying Orcs or whatever it was you were doing prior to landing on this page. For the rest of us who didn't completely geek out (or only somewhat geeked out) when these movies hit theatres, this LOTR Extended Editions Set is the one to buy. If you've only seen the theatrical release of these movies, you're seriously missing out. The extended versions delve deeper and allow the stories to play out more thoroughly - in fact the extended versions create a much better flow and reveal the fact that this is really one long story that has been cut into 3 pieces.

This Extended Editions Set adds almost 2 additional hours between the 3 movies (now that's a lot of footage rescued from the cutting room floor). Not only that, but you get 4 discs per movie - 2 discs for the extended movie and another 2 for bonus materials (think special effects, script creation, etc).
