Detroit Lions Panoramic - Silverdome

In 1975 the NFL's Detroit Lions, a franchise that traces its origins all the way back to the Portsmouth Spartans of the 1930's, moved into the Silverdome, a state-of-the-art facility that was the largest air-supported domed structure in the world. During their 'Silverdome Years' Detroit assembled strong teams during the 1990s, reaching the playoffs four times from 1991 to 1995 under head coach Wayne Fontes. Star running back Barry Sanders recorded nine consecutive 1000-yard seasons from 1989 to 1997 while calling the Silverdome home. After playing 30 miles north of Detroit for 27 years, the Lions returned to downtown Detroit in 2002 to play at Ford Field, a new $315 million indoor stadium that will play host to the 2006 Super Bowl.
