The club was founded in the early 1920's by the "who's who" of Washington DC's political elite. Congressional's Blue Course has received the most notoriety, having hosted two United States Opens, a Senior US Open, and a PGA Championship. A notoriously difficult course, Congressional hosted the US Open in 1997 becoming the longest course in Open history (at that time).
