In 2006, Oakland A's pitcher Barry Zito was again the anchor of the Oakland staff. Selected to his third All-Star game, Barry helped lead Oakland all the way to the AL Championship Series. Barry was 47-17 over his first three seasons in the MLB and won at least 10 games in each of his first six full seasons. And in 2002, he did much better than that going 23-5 with a 2.75 ERA and 182 strike-outs in winning the American League Cy Young Award. Barry features one of the best curveballs in the game. Batters' knees often buckle when Barry breaks off his curve and when his command is on he is nearly unhittable. Barry also throws an excellent changeup to further keep hitters off balance. Community minded, Barry has taken a lead role in the Major League Baseball Players Trust for Children in addition to various other charitable interests. In recent years, Barry conceived and launched Strikeouts For Troops, an organization that benefits America's war-wounded. Fundraising events, fan donations at www.strikeoutsfortroops.org and cash pledges by Zito and more than 35 players for on-field performance in various statistical categories go directly to wounded U.S. military recuperating in hospitals across the country.
