Just like your clothing, items in a room should be coordinated but they need not match. Different patterns and colors can work very well together as long as there's some central theme that ties everything together. That theme can be a color, pattern, texture, style - almost anything. In fact, your room will be more interesting, not to mention eye catching if you're items don't all perfectly match. You don't want your room to look like a page from a Pottery Barn catalog - mundane, boring and without much thought to it; this won't impress anyone, except maybe your mom. Accessories are meant to accentuate and add to a room, not blend into the background - dream in color and patterns.
