iPhone Buzzkill

iPhone BuzzkillIt is 12:20 AM on June 30th, 2007. The Apple iPhone has officially been on sale for 6 hours and 20 minutes in California. My trip to the San Francisco Apple Store could not have gone more smoothly. I was third in line to see a cashier whom I would ask for an 8GB iPhone. Swipe the corporate card, sign, and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. I did ask the cashier what I would need to do to activate the phone, to which I was told I just needed to download the latest version of iTunes and dock the phone. It sounded too good to be true, but after the ease of buying one, who was I to doubt?

Upon filling out my information, an error message popped up seemingly indicating that my Business Plan would not work with the iPhone. A phone number for AT&T was listed. I called, and was put on hold for about 7 minutes -- not bad all things considered. A representative helped me out, put me on a new plan, and said everything would be okay. If I received a message about taking time to activate, I needn't worry -- "the computers" are just congested.

One hour passed. Two hours passed. Right as I was about to fall asleep resigned to figuring it out in the morning, I received an email from AT&T saying the rate plan was not compatible. The same phone number was listed. I was on the phone with a representative after one ring, but then again, it's after midnight PST. Exactly the same rigamarole took place. I was put on a proper plan, but my phone is no closer to being activated.

Worst of all, our Chief Technology Officer has been using his phone for an hour and says it's "<expletive-deleted> amazing!"
